Angel sculpture by well.known artist Vaidas Ramoška now also in Ljubljana

At 6pm yesterday in the Atrium of the City Museum, Mayor of Ljubljana Zoran Janković unveiled a Sculpture of a White Angel, a gift to Ljubljana from the City of Vilnius. Angels by well.known artist Vaidas Ramoška have for some years decorated the capital of Lithuania while from this year on this symbol of the goodwill and hospitality of Vilnius has been donated to Warsaw, Kaliningrad, St Petersburg, Stockholm and now also Ljubljana.

Honouring Ljubljana Citizens

The title of Ljubljana Woman of the Year for 2008 was awarded to world famous musician Prof. Irena Grafenauer, who unfortunately could not attend the ceremony, as yesterday she was in Italy to receive the premier international states prize. The title of Ljubljana's 2008 Man of the Year award was handed to neurosurgeon Prof. Dr. Vinko V. Dolenc by the Mayor.

Recipients of the City of Ljubljana's 2008 Plaques were Uroš Lajovic, Vladislav Sluga, Tone Sazonov - Tonač, J.E. Krek - Sostro Fruit & Gardening Society, the Jelka kindergarten, Anton Tone Zadnikar, Dr. Dimitrij Mitja Bartenjev, Dr. Marjana Kobe and two youth scouting associations, Rašiški rod and Močvirski tulipani.

Gala Session of Ljubljana City Council

On the occasion of the Ljubljana public holiday, yesterday at 2pm at Ljubljana Castle a Gala Session of Ljubljana City Council got underway, at which Mayor Zoran Janković with Milena Mileva Blažić, President of Ljubljana City Council's Awards Commission presented the City of Ljubljana's 2008 awards and prizes as well as honouring citizens. The Gala Session of Ljubljana City Council was compered by Bernarda Žarn, with performances by the city pipers, the Ljubljana octet, violinist Klara Gomboc and clarinetist Aljaž Beguša, both of whom are recipients of City of Ljubljana bursaries.

'European Village' in Ljubljana

Yesterday morning, Pogačarjev Square became a 'European Village' for a while. Schoolchildren stood on stands representing the 27 EU member states, their national symbols, history, culture, traditions, customs, national costumes, music, sport, culinary delicacies and other aspects. The event was also attended by Mayor of Ljubljana Zoran Janković accompanied by the mayors of various capital cities participating in the Meeting of Mayors of European Capitals.

Concert to celebrate Ljubljana City Holiday and Europe Day

A concert by the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra entitled 'Europe to Ljubljana – Ljubljana to Europe' was held yesterday at 9pm on Pogačar Square. The concert was organised by the City of Ljubljana and the Representation of the EU Commission in Slovenia to celebrate May 9, Europe Day and Ljubljana City Holiday. The audience was addressed by EU Commissioner Janez Potočnik and by Zoran Janković, the Mayor of Ljubljana.

José Manuel Barrosa in Ljubljana

In the framework of his visit to the WDR Europa Forum 2008, the President of the European Commission José Manuel Barrosa visited the Ljubljana Brdo Technological Park, where he met the Ljubljana Deputy Mayoress Jadranka Dakić. In the afternoon, he went for a stroll in the centre of Ljubljana, accompanied by Zoran Janković, the Mayor of Ljubljana, and his host, Premier Janez Janša.

The signing of both 'Ljubljana Declarations'

Both Ljubljana Declarations were signed in the Red Hall at Ljubljana City Hall a little before 6pm on 8 May by the representatives of capital cities, participants in the Meeting of Mayors of the capitals of EU member states, candidate states for membership and states from the EU enlargement area.
The Declarations are the Mayors' Declaration on the role of the capital city in intercultural dialogue and the creation of active co-existence, which will contribute to respect for diversity and via this to raising the quality of life in capitals, and the Declaration on relationships between capital cities and the State, which is an expression of the desire for the independence of the local authorities.

Welcoming reception for the delegations

The Mayor Zoran Janković welcomed the mayors and delegations of Sarajevo, Podgorica, Skopje, Warsaw, Luxembourg and Dublin, who had arrived to Ljubljana yesterday afternoon. The welcome reception was held yesterday at 7.30pm in the Red Salon of the City Hall.
